HONGKONG. 26th May, 1921.

With reference to Lord Milner's despatch No.372 of the

28th of October, 1920, I have the honour to forward copies of

correspondence with the Director of the Geological Survey of Indis

regarding the proposed geological survey of liongkong.

2. I am of opinion that the sugestions made in the concluding paragraph of Dr. Pascoe's letter might be adopted,nd I shall therefore be glad if advertisements may be inserted in the pepers mentioned end if the Herd of the Mineral Resources Bureau may be asked if he will be good enough to interview applicants./

3. It is proposed to offer selery at the rate of £800 per annum payable while in the Colony at the privileged exchange rates in force for the Civil Service generally. Free passages would be granted to and from Hongkong with half pay for the period of the voyages; necessary travelling and field expenses while in the Colony would be paid, and free quarters or an allowance in lieu would be granted.

4. As stated in the enclosed letter of the 21st of February it is thought that one year should suffice to complete the survey. September would seem the most suitable time to begin the work, as that month marks the beginning of the cool dry season.

5. I shall also be glad if the Crown Agents for the Colonies may be instructed to obtain and forward a copy of the work referred

to by Dr. Pascoe.
